After a Two-Year Pause Due to the Pandemic, the Crocodile Boat Rowing Competition was held again at TBA

After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) held a crocodile boat rowing competition on Saturday (6/8/2022) at the Batu Arang Lake (TBA) post-mining pond in North Sangatta. The competition, held in celebration of World Environment Day 2022, was attended by 77 teams comprised of KPC representatives from various departments, divisions, and contractors.

The Red Beavers (BBM) team from the Health, Safety, Environment, and Security (HSES) Division successfully won first place using a knockout system with the fastest record time for each group that is eligible to participate in the next race. In the final round, BBM finished with the fastest time of 3 minutes 46 seconds on a 520-meter track.

Meanwhile, the HTM1 team from the Mining Support Division (MSD) took second place. HTM1 finished only 3 seconds slower than the BBM champion, who finished in 3 minutes 49 seconds. Team Ready to Double from the Coal Processing and Handling Division (CPHD) took third place with a time of 4 minutes and 06 seconds.

Employees, contractors, and employees’ families are always interested and enthusiastic about this crocodile boat rowing competition. They flocked to the pond of the former Pit Surya mine to cheer on their favorite team and to have fun.

Wawan Setiawan, General Manager External Affairs and Sustainable Development (ESD) KPC, stated that the main goal of the rowing competition was to create a different situation for employees. “This activity is held so that employees can get out of their routines and share happiness together,” Wawan explained.

Wawan hopes that the rowing competition will foster teamwork, making employees more enthusiastic and, as a result, more productive at work. “We hope that after this activity, our coworkers will return to work with renewed vigor and be more productive,” Wawan said.

The crocodile boat rowing competition is one of the activities in the 2022 Environmental Olympics, according to Indias Prasetyono, Chairperson of the 2022 Environmental Olympic Committee. This was a yearly occurrence prior to the Covid 19 pandemic, which affected the entire world, including Sangatta. It was held again this year, with the same health protocols and high safety standards in place.

Indias went on to say that, in addition to rowing, the 2022 Environmental Olympics will feature environmental poster competitions, environmental photos, enviro races, enviro runs, hiking, and webinars. There are two remaining competitions in the Environmental Olympiad, namely the enviro run and hiking, which are scheduled to take place on August 13 and 20, 2022, respectively. (*)
