Governor Encourages Study on Utilization of TBA Mine Pond

The Governor of East Kalimantan, Dr. H. Rudy Mas’ud, together with the Regent of East Kutai, Ardiansyah Sulaiman, provincial and regency government officials, and representatives from relevant technical agencies, visited Telaga Batu Arang (TBA) in Sangatta, East Kutai Regency. TBA, a lake formed from the reclamation of a former coal mining site owned by PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), is currently being studied as an alternative raw water source for Perumdam (Regional Drinking Water Company) Tirta Tuah Benua (TTB). Independent tests have shown that the water quality is good, with a pH above 7.
With a depth of 35 meters, the lake is considered to have potential not only as a source of clean water but also as a tourism destination and a venue for rowing sports. However, the Governor emphasized the need for comprehensive technical studies and formal recognition from environmental authorities to ensure its utilization is legally valid and to address the negative stigma surrounding post-mining lakes.
East Kutai Regent Ardiansyah Sulaiman noted that his administration is exploring cooperation with KPC to develop TBA’s potential. He also stressed the importance of basic infrastructure support—such as pipelines, electricity, and road access—so that the lake can be optimally utilized by the community. Meanwhile, Perumdam (Regional Drinking Water Company) TTB President Director Suparjan confirmed that TTB is preparing a five-year roadmap for clean water services, including the construction of new installations in Kabo and Teluk Pandan.(*)
