Training and Education

Helping the community to obtain proper education is the goal of KPC’s community development program in the education and training sector. Throughout 2007 KPC continued the commitment to give scholarship support. In 2007, approximately 112 students received KPC scholarships or registered as new scholarship recipients. In addition 119 students received an extension for their scholarships. Last December, KPC handed over 18 scholarships to local residents to pursue Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees. One of the recipients will conduct his Post-Graduate study at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

Aside from providing scholarships, KPC’s commitment towards the improvement of education quality is shown through the providing of incentives for 50 teachers in remote areas. Through this support, KPC expects to motivate the teachers in the carrying out of their duties.

The scholarship and teacher incentive programs were chosen due to the fact that they are highly needed by the community around KPC’s operational areas. Below is a table of scholarship recipients in 2007:

Another program in the education and training sector that KPC continued to implement is the Junior Achievement Indonesia (PJI) program. PJI is a program that gives entrepreneurship training to students. In 2007, the PJI of East Kutai was chosen as the best in Indonesia and received the opportunity to represent Indonesia at the 2007 Junior Achievement Worldwide Conference, held in Washington DC, U.S. The PJI Business Simulation Activity in 2007 was attended by 1,728 students at the Junior High and High School/Vocational School levels.

KPC also offered counseling and community education awareness improvement programs. These programs were conducted through the education chitchat program broadcasted on GWP radio, the children’s reading program and through training for 47 art teachers with the LINGKAR program.

KPC’s commitment to education is also shown through the development of educational facilities, such as the contrucion of school buildings, classrooms, and procurement of tables and chairs. The construction of the GPL (Griya Prima Lestari) Munthe Elementary School was completed in 2007. The twelve classrooms in the GPL Elementary School answered the needs of more than 300 students in the teaching and learning process.

The construction of three classrooms in the Nurul Hikmah Junior High School was also completed in 2007. Other educational supports provided in 2007 are among others: contruction of three classrooms in State Elementary School 019 Singa Gembara, construction of three classrooms of Madrasah Tsanawiyah, and procurement of tables and chairs for State Elementary School 012 Sepaso Induk and State Elementary School 04 Sepaso, the contruction of Persada Plus (LP-Yapenti) Junior High School in North Sengata, and the construction of the Al-Ma’arif Integrated Kindergarten in South Sengata Regency.
