In 2007 KPC continued to conduct various activities related to health and sanitation programs. Operations for cleft lips and burns are still part of annual programs conducted at the Kanujoso Djatiwibowo General Hospital (RSKD) Balikpapan, operating on 80 patients. This program is dedicated to impoverished families in East Kalimantan as well as some parts of South and Central Kalimantan. The program is the result of cooperation between KPC, a medical team from Interplast Australia, the Indonesian Association of Plastic Surgeons (PERAPI), the University of Airlangga’s Faculty of Anesthesia Surabaya, East Kutai’s Health Department, Kanujoso Djatiwibowo General Hospital (RSKD) Balikpapan, and several KPC contractors such as Trakindo, Thiess and PAMA. With regards to the HIV/AIDS prevention programs, KPC has built one Sexually Transmitted Diseases clinic in Bengalon. Throughout 2007, the clinic and other similar clinics in Sengata routinely conducted health examinations for 238 commercial sex workers (PSK). Counseling and training on the treatment of HIV/AIDS were also given to Puskesmas (Community Health Center) cadres and the community. Another health program that also came to KPC’s attention was the control of Dengue Fever and Malaria. In 2007, 165 cases of dengue fever resulting in one fatality were recorded in the KPC area. In cooperation with the Health Department of East Kutai, KPC conducted fogging and surveys of mosquito larvae on a regular basis by involving Posyandu (Integrated Health Services Center) cadres. KPC’s commitment to combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases was acknowledged with an award by Metro TV in cooperation with UNDP for KPC’s achievement within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) category 6 (Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases). The MDG award was given to companies or regional governments that are committed to implementing community development programs that support the eight goals of the MDGs. Another community health program conducted in 2007 was health counseling through an interactive program broadcasted by the Gema Wana Prima (GWP) FM radio every Wednesday afternoon. Under the framework of this program, 45 health topics were conveyed by health professionals. The other program being run is the Mother and Child Nutrition survey held in 18 villages in Bengalon, Rantau Pulung and Sengata regencies. The survey was conducted by the Bogor Health Department’s Research and Development Center for Food and Nutrition in cooperation with the East Kutai’s Health Departments and KPC’s field officers for 511 children between the age of 6 and 59 months in the areas of North Sengata, Sengata, Bengalon and Rantau Pulung. The survey also incorporated monitoring (weight and height measurements) for 711 toddlers in six selected villages, namely Tanjung Labu, South Sengata, Singa Gembara, Swarga Bara, Sekerat and South Sepaso. The result of the survey showed a prevalence of toddlers suffering malnutrition or 30.7% (in the category of chronic but not acute cases). To follow up on these findings, KPC worked together with the East Kutai Health Department with the assistance of the Bogor Health Department’s Research and Development Center for Food and Nutrition, to hold a training session on the Management of toddlers suffering malnutrition and Nutrient Deficiency. There were 63 participants, comprising health officers, PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment Groups), and Posyandu cadres. The survey’s recommendation was the implementation of the PERGIZI (Community Initiative and Empowerment through Education and Nutritional Rehabilitation) based Toddlers Nutrition and Health Improvement program which will be conducted next year in seven Posyandus and six villages as a pilot project. Another community health program is the cataract operations conducted in cooperation with the Samarinda Community Eye Health Center (BKMM) and the East Kutai Regency Health Department that managed to provide operations for 15 people. Other programs include mass circumcision operations for children, which were conducted in three areas – Rantau Pulung (52 children), Bengalon (125 children) and Sengata (100 children). A mass free medical service was conducted in several villages in cooperation with various health institutions, such as the Indonesian Red Cross and the Family Welfare Empowerment Group (PKK). The program managed to provide medical services to 885 people in Sengata, Bengalon, Muara Bengkal and Muara Ancalong areas. With Indonesian Republic Health Department, East Kutai Regional Government and PPTI (Association of Indonesian for Combating Tuberculosis), KPC was involved in the Combating Tuberculosis Program. The activities conducted were suspect observation and strengthening of PMO cadres. To educate the community about bone health, KPC, East Kutai Health Service, and the Indonesian Doctor Association (IDI) held a symposium on bone porosity. The symposium was held on September 8th 2007 in the Prima School hall. |
