INTRODUCTION The Tanjung Bara International School is resourced by Pt Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and is supported by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training (WADET), under an Education Services Agreement. The school follows the term structure, curriculum and the policies and procedures of WADET. The school is aligned with of WADET's Swan District. The school Principal and class teachers are all registered with the Western Australian College of Teaching, We welcome all students and their parents and invite you to become involved in a partnership of educating your children. The greatest advantages of the school are the multi level classes and the small teacher to student ratio of approximately 1:12 which allows for considerable interaction across the ages and one on one teaching opportunities. We stand by the principles of best practise which are outlined in the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. Our number one guiding principle is that Every child be given the opportunity to develop their whole being, and that they be supported in becoming the best that they can be (achieve their potential). ENROLMENT and CLASS ALLOCATION By Indonesian law, the father must hold a foreign passport before children can attend an International School. Families need to complete an application for enrolment providing extensive details of the childs previous schooling, capabilities and medical history. This form needs to be submitted to the KPC Human Resources Advisor and the Principal for approval. Parents of children with Special Needs (academic, social, emotional or physical) need to consider in an informed manner the level of resourcing and capabilities of TBIS in catering for their child. In this isolated location and complex multi-age class structure catering for such needs is extremely difficult and cannot be guaranteed as equivalent to that of a Western Australian government school. This policy exists to provide fair and equitable access to the majority of children within the schools resourcing capabilities. (See Enrolment Policy and the Students at Educational Risk Policy for elaboration). TBIS adheres to the WADET enrolment and class allocation ages. Students arriving from locations where this varies will only be allocated a class outside of TBIS policy in extremely specific circumstances. Decisions will be evidence based and highly negotiated. The class structure for 2006 as of January is; Java Class Kindergarten/Pre-Primary (9 full time and 3 part time students) Sulewesi Class Yr 1 - 4 (14 students) Sumatra Class Yr 5 - 7 (10 students) Due to the school adopting Outcomes Based Education (OBE) approach a childs educational provision is not allotted to a year level. All students are taught on their basis of their stage of development. Children generally move on to secondary school in other locations once they have completed Yr 7. Pre-Compulsory Schooling and Entry Age Children are admitted to Kindergarten if they turn four years of age prior to July 1st of the year they commence attending. For example in 2006 any child born between July 1st 2001 and June 30th 2002 is eligible to commence Kindergarten attendance in 2006. Any child turning 4 years of age after June 30th this year must wait until 2007 to commence attendance. Kindergarten is part time attendance of; Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8.00 am - 12.15 pm. Pre-Primary education is also non-compulsory (but full time) and parents may choose whether to enrol their child or not and may negotiate with the class teacher a regular but modified attendance. FEES In 2006 all students shall be charged a marginal fee for attendance at TBIS. The rate determined for 2006 is; Full time attendance $1500 US per term Part time attendance (primarily Kindergarten) $750 US per term. School Times and Dates Students attend school for 5 days per week from 8.00 am - 2.15 pm (with an early close on Tuesdays of 1.25 pm). The school term dates coincide with Western Australian Government Schools with 4 terms of approximately 10 weeks. The greatest break is of approximately 6 weeks commencing at around December 16th until February 1st. CURRICULUM and EXTRA CURRICULAR TBIS is educationally guided by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training; therefore the underlying guide for teachers is the Curriculum Framework; a document which outlines key Outcomes, Teaching and Learning Principles and the Values which underpin all of this. It is the teachers role to identify where a child is at developmentally, devise programs which are motivating and pitched at the appropriate level and to utilise a variety of evaluation tools to determine whether a child has consistently demonstrated the required outcome. Therefore there is no such thing as Yr1 or Yr 5 work for example. In these multi-age classes there are indeed a wide spread of abilities and developmental levels to be catered for. Children at TBIS have the opportunity to participate in specialist Sports sessions, Drama productions and Art classes outside of standard school programs. Extra Curricular activities also include discos, movie nights and swimming lessons. Students are also able to participate in Bahasa Indonesian lessons and cultural experiences. Camps and a variety of local and major incursions and excursions are also a feature of the school. Throughout the year the students participate in events such as Indonesian Independence Day, Book Week, Fruit and Vegie week, Charity Fundraisers, ANZAC Day and a variety of other religious and cultural celebrations. Tanjung Bara International School is a unique and high quality educational and life experience for every child who attends. CONTACT DETAILS
