Environment

ImageKPC manages the environmental impacts resulting from its operations through:

  • Preventing pollution.
  • Returning all mined areas to a safe, stable and productive state.
  • Maintaining biodiversity

Since the commencement of mining to the end of September 2007 over 2,729 hectares of disturbed land have been rehabilitated. Approximately 2,172,933 seedlings had been planted in rehabilitation areas that consist of 168 species (a part of the Biodiversity program). To support the Mine Rehabilitation program, KPC has a nursery that produces 300,000 seedlings annually.

KPC also has an extensive environmental monitoring program measuring a range of parameters including water quality, air quality and overburden geochemical characteristics etc. An environmental laboratory on-site carries out many of the required analyses. The management of hydrocarbons and wastes receives a high priority.

ImageBeyond the mining lease boundaries, KPC supports the Government conservation efforts by playing a major role in the Government-Industry co-operation initiative known as The Friends of Kutai. Nine industries located close to the 200,000 hectare Kutai National Park co-operate with the Ministry of Forestry by providing management advice and funding for the Park annually.

KPC also supports the efforts to conserve the endangered orang-utan by supporting the BOSF (Balikpapan Orang-utan Survival Foundation) near Balikpapan.
